COMECOCO2 EURECAT

Renewable methanol for sustainable maritime transport.

COMECOCO2 develops and validates an efficient system that integrates a high-temperature co-electrolyser (co-SOEC) and a catalytic reactor to produce competitive renewable methanol from CO2 captured from wastewater, reclaimed water and renewable electricity.

This system, with application in maritime transport, will be validated in a laboratory environment and a preliminary validation will be carried out in a relevant environment, specifically in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).

Despite the deployment of numerous emission mitigation policies through the use of renewable energy alternatives, sectors such as heavy transport continue to use almost exclusively fossil fuels. In this sense, one of the most promising and viable options to decarbonise this sector is the use of liquid fuels from the conversion of renewable electricity to synthetic fuels from Power-to-Liquid (P2L) routes.

COMECOCO2 represents a firm step towards the decarbonisation of the maritime sector, aligning with the European objectives of energy transition and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. With this initiative, the consortium reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and innovation, betting on a disruptive technology that will not only benefit the maritime sector but will also open up new opportunities in the country’s energy industry.

Eurecat, through its Metallic and Ceramic Materials Unit, develops barrier coatings for high-temperature co-electrolysers (SOEC), as well as protective coatings on metallic interconnectors, which are processed by magnetron sputtering technology.
