DEMOWARE is an EU FP7 research project aiming at rectifying the shortcomings that hamper the implementation of water reuse by executing a highly collaborative programme of demonstration and exploitation, using nine existing and one greenfield site to stimulate innovation and improve cohesion within the evolving European water reuse sector.
The project, finalized in December 2016, was guided by SMEs & industry priorities and had two main objectives: to enhance the availability and reliability of innovative water reuse solutions and to create a unified professional identity for the European Water Reuse sector.
The consortium, led by Eurecat’s Sustainability Unit, was constituted by several relevant SMEs in water research and renowned institutions in the field of water recycling. The initiative had the support of several European state members and institutions such as the Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform (WssTP).
Eurecat has been responsible for the coordination of the technology demonstration work package. In addition, the center was involved in tasks focused on the production of energy while reclaiming water (anaerobic membrane bioreactor), technologies for water reuse in livestock production, innovative technologies for monitoring and preventing fouling in reclaimed water distribution networks and risk assessment and life cycle assessment of water reuse schemes.
