Recovery and valorisation of urban digestates resources in the framework of the circular economy to transform them into fertilisers of high-added value.
DIGESTAKE project develops news processes and innovative technologies for the treatment, recovery, valorisation and reuse of liquids and gaseous effluents from the anaerobic digestion of WWTPs, to recover and reconvert the wastewater nutrients.
The application of this innovation converts carbon dioxide from biogas into organic compounds through bioelectrochemical systems. In addition, the project develops an alternative process to recover phosphorus in the form of solid fertilizer through the crystallization of struvite; a recovery process of ammonium salts through adsorption-desorption systems with regenerable zeolites; a process to eliminate excess nitrogen with low energy consumption and new processes of direct osmosis.
Through its Sustainability Technology Unit, Eurecat participates in the development of the process for obtaining struvite through mining byproducts. The project, coordinated by the research group LEGUIA from the University of Girona, also counts with the participation of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, the University of Barcelona, CETAQUA and LEITAT, together with the companies ADASA Sistemas, AQUAMBIENTE, IBERPOTASH and LEF Ingenieros.
