New device for the diagnosis and monitoring of haemoglobin and potassium for the detection and monitoring of chronic kidney disease.

Currently, more than 90 million people in the EU have soe degree of chronic kidney disease (CKD), a condition in which kidney function deteriorates over time and can have very serious health implications, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Early detection and management of this silent condition is crucial to avoid that patient’s health get worse and improve their quality of life.

The ERKSens project develops an innovative haemoglobin-potassium sensor with the objective to improve the monitoring of the evolution of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The main advantage of this new sensor is that it allows a faster, and make easier the monitoring of the CKD in order to tailor its treatment. The sensor created by ERKSens measures haemoglobin and potassium in the same device that is for personal use – the patient can use it at home – and for the medical professionals, using it at the same primary care consultation.

The Functional Printing and Embedded Devices Unit of Eurecat participates in the project developing the new haemoglobin-potassium sensor based on printed and hybrid electronics. On the other hand, ERKSens counts with a consortium coordinated by the CreatSens Health company, in collaboration with the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and the University Rovira i Virgili (URV).
