HACDOS EURECAT

Solar generation of hydrogen from wastewater in economical and scalable photocatalytic panels.

The HACDOS project aims to design, produce and validate low-cost solar photocatalytic panels for hydrogen production from wastewater. This process entails the degradation of aqueous pollutants, mostly organic, through solar photocatalytic reforming in anaerobic conditions with concomitant hydrogen production.

HACDOS is focused on scaling up the process and pilot-scale validation of this technology, using wastewater as raw materials and under natural sunlight.

Among others, the key performance parameters monitored are pollutant removal, hydrogen productivity and purity, hydraulic residence time, and durability and robustness under long-term pilot plant operating conditions.

HACDOS will address the techno-economic feasibility of implementing the technology in different industries and scenarios, developing a market capture strategy and a comprehensive business plan model. The ultimate goal is to consolidate an affordable solar photocatalysis-based model as a viable and cost-effective wastewater valorisation option for green hydrogen production.

The HACDOS modular system is more efficient, cheaper and easily scalable compared to other equivalent systems on the market, which facilitates its implementation in a wide range of industrial scales.

Eurecat participates in the HACDOS project through its Chemical Technology Unit, leading and promoting the implementation of processes related to the production of hydrogen from renewable energy.

Apart from Eurecat, the project consortium is made up of three other entities: FACSA, ENAGAS and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV).
