LIFE BIOGASNET EURECAT

Development of a profitable, sustainable and environmental friendly biogas purification system.

The use of biogas for energy production is increasing due the lower cost and associated reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to fossil fuels. To use this biogas as a fuel is needed to remove the hydrogen sulphide contained through desulfurization technologies that present high environmental impacts.

LIFE BIOGASNET project develops an innovative technology, based on biological processes, since it couples a biotrickling filter to a nitrification bioreactor, with the aim to promote the use of biogas as a sustainable energy source.

Technology of LIFE BIOGASNET presents potential environmental advantages compared to current practices of biogas desulfurization: it can reduce the environmental footprint up to 55% by reducing the carbon dioxide emission, it reduces reagent consumption and additionally, it allows to obtain a secondary raw material minimizing the waste production.

During the project, which counts with the participation of Sustainability Unit of Eurecat, a prototype will be designed, constructed and operated in two-different facilities situated in Cadiz and Athens in order to validate the technology and demonstrate its robustness under different conditions.

LIFE BIOGASNET consortium is formed by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), AERIS Environmental Technologies, the University of Cadiz (UCA), the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Bioreciclaje Cádiz.
