A mission-driven system to create zero-emission electric vehicles optimised for urban logistics.
Shift2Zero, coordinated by Eurecat, is developing innovative designs and functionalities for mission-specific, zero-emission N1 electric light commercial vehicles (e-LCVs) to address the evolving demands of urban logistics while reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency.
Shift2Zero shapes zero-emission right-sized N1 concepts with enhanced and safe functionalities, including dual transport (people and freight), assessing the combined potential of novel design variants and logistics innovations to materialise user requirements in current and future missions.
To further optimise logistics operations, Shift2Zero is integrating advanced cargo management solutions. These innovations include swappable modular units to facilitate seamless transhipment and energy-efficient heating systems for passenger cabins, reducing energy consumption and optimising logistics operations.
Additionally, the project also incorporates geofencing technologies to ensure safe operations in restricted urban zones and bi-directional charging capabilities, while enhancing vehicle safety through innovative materials and designs.
In this regard, Shift2Zero translates current and future needs of end-users in e-commerce, returns management, and cold deliveries, into technical requirements for vehicles, fleets, and infrastructure. This approach will ensure that the solutions can be aligned with real-world operational challenges.
Shift2Zero solutions will be demonstrated in six pilot sites across Europe, focusing on real-life urban logistics operations. The project’s outcomes aim to enhance accessibility, affordability, and sustainability in urban logistics while meeting end-user requirements and advancing zero-emission mobility.
Eurecat coordinates Shift2Zero through the Product Innovation and Multiphysics Simulation Unit, which leads the development of innovations to be included in the vehicles that will circulate in the pilots. The project also involves the Audiovisual Technologies Unit collaborating in immersive visualisation using Virtual or extended Reality, including advanced interfaces for load distribution according to the vehicle configuration.
Additionally, the Training Department is creating a specialised training program for logistics end-users and workers, using Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) and covering topics such as technical modules for fleet managers and operational training for drivers.
The consortium brings together 30 partners from 10 European countries across academia, industry, and public authorities, covering the entire automotive and logistics value chains.
