TANGIBLE EURECAT

Experimental development of tangible interfaces through furniture to improve the user experience during control and interaction in smart kitchens.

The TANGIBLE project integrates tangible interface technologies (TUI, Tangible User Interfaces) on the surfaces and materials of the kitchen equipment.

TANGIBLE offers new value utilities to professional and domestic kitchen users by developing an immersive online social interaction space based on an extended reality from a machine learning agent. The project also facilitates the control of the options of the digital environment, stimulating more inclusive co-creation activities in work processes.

The use of new technologies such as the Internet of Things or Artificial intelligence has been especially limited to consumer electronics or household appliances, leaving their integration in furniture and other non-electronic habitat products taking a back seat.

Eurecat’s Product Innovation and Multiphysics Simulation Unit participates in this project by studying the feasibility of embedded electronic designs, to convert furniture surfaces into sensitive interfaces that allow the immediate display of information in context, as well as touch control.

In particular, tangible user interfaces enable the following functionalities:

  • Presentation of information through an alphanumeric display hidden inside the surface material itself.
  • Detection of actions by the user by proximity and contact with the material.
  • Weighing of food from a certain area of the countertop.
  • Management of smart devices located in the immediate environment of this piece of furniture.

The project consortium, led by the interior furnishings and hotel contract cluster AMBIT, includes the participation of Zania Design, AMIC, Ceiser, Foodservice Cluster and Eurecat, and the support of Wethinkwide and FoodThinkers.
