polymers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Polymers-5B<\/strong> project develops <strong>novel alternative biological polymers<\/strong> synthesized from biobased monomers sourced from underexploited second-generation feedstocks, such as agri\/food waste and biomass, obeying the food first and cascading principle.<\/p>\n<p>Polymers-5B brings together cutting-edge technologies and knowledge to develop and drive <strong>innovation in biocatalysis and green chemistry processes, generating novel bio-based polymers<\/strong> like polyesters and polyamides with pendent functional groups (e.g. hydroxy, carboxylic, amine, epoxy, thiol, etc.), polyphenols and polyfurans, which mimic fossil-based polymers properties, <strong>targeting improved biodegradability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These new polymers will be blended to provide <strong>valuable bio-composites and polymeric materials for the textile, automotive, furniture and polymeric resin markets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the machine learning tools of the project will drive the optimisation of the developed technologies towards a minimum resource usage, while technological, economic, and environmental sustainability aspects will be incorporated by Eurecat early in the design phase by adopting Sustainable by Design (SSbD) approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Eurecat participates in the project through different Technological Units: <a href=\"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/field-of-knowledge\/waste-energy-environmental-impact\/\">Waste, Energy and Environmental Impact (WEEI)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/field-of-knowledge\/water-air-soil\/\">Water, Air and Soil (WAS)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/field-of-knowledge\/chemical-technology\/\">Chemical Technology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/field-of-knowledge\/functional-textiles\/\">Functional Textiles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/field-of-knowledge\/plastic-materials-composites\/\">Polymeric and Composites Processes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Polymers-5B consortium is made up of 12 partners from seven
