The detection of concentrations exceeding the limits established in the Spanish Royal Decree 3\/2023 at various water intake points highlights the urgent need to develop effective solutions that ensure regulatory compliance and the protection of public health.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, the <strong>PFAS-CLEARWATER project develops and validates an integrated methodology that combines advanced technologies for the effective removal of PFAS from contaminated water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The solution combines <strong>separation technologies and oxidation processes<\/strong>, optimized according to water characteristics and operational conditions, ensuring both treatment effectiveness and proper management of the generated waste streams.<\/p>\n<p>The project is structured into interrelated phases, beginning with the <strong>characterization of PFAS contamination in different water sources<\/strong>. Secondly, the work focuses on the <strong>development and evaluation of combined treatment schemes in controlled environments <\/strong>(adsorption, ion exchange, advanced oxidation and membranes). Finally, the project will validate the <strong>technical and economic feasibility of the solution<\/strong> <strong>through pilot plants under representative conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The expected impact includes <strong>improved drinking water quality and the generation of key knowledge for operators and authorities<\/strong>. The combination of technologies increases PFAS removal efficiency and advances more sustainable solutions aligned with circular economy principles.<\/p>\n<p>The consortium is composed of the research centres <a href=\"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\">Eurecat<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urv.cat\/en\/\">Rovira i Virgili University (URV)<\/a>, together with the water supply companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ematsa.cat\/es\/\">Ematsa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aiguesdereus.cat\/\">Aig\u00fces de Reus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Within this framework, <a href=\"\/?page_id=104762\">Eurecat\u2019s Water, Air and Soils technological unit<\/a> leads the <strong>development and optimization of technologies for PFAS separation and removal using activated carbons<\/strong>, resins and advanced oxidation processes, and participates in the design, scaling and validation of the treatment methodology at pilot scale in real operational
