{"id":102446,"date":"2020-01-29T11:14:26","date_gmt":"2020-01-29T11:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/?p=102446"},"modified":"2020-06-19T07:45:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T07:45:00","slug":"eurecat-develops-first-biophotonic-implant-deliver-therapeutic-proteins-multiple-sclerosis-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/eurecat-develops-first-biophotonic-implant-deliver-therapeutic-proteins-multiple-sclerosis-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurecat develops the first biophotonic implant to deliver therapeutic proteins to Multiple Sclerosis patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eurecat<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0technology centre has developed, within the <strong>Optogenerapy<\/strong> consortium, the first<strong> subcutaneous biophotonic implant<\/strong> using optogenetic technology to deliver doses of therapeutic proteins to patients with <strong>Multiple Sclerosis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The device has been<strong> pre-clinically validated<\/strong> and features a <strong>printed circuit board<\/strong> that activates a light source which controls therapeutic Interferon Beta (IFN-\u00df) protein production by genetically engineered cells confined within the implant.<\/p>\n<p>Biotza Guti\u00e9rrez, the consortium\u2019s coordinator from Eurecat Technology Centre, says the solution \u201crelies on a more personalised delivery of the Interferon Beta protein, with the possibility of a switch on switch off option according to patient\u2019s needs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers have developed an innovative industrial manufacturing process for micro-injection and a miniaturised wireless light source that enables autonomous optical performance.<\/p>\n<p>The solution developed \u201ccan be applied to other cellular therapies which operate as a platform for delivering the drug required by each patient,\u201d states Guti\u00e9rrez.<\/p>\n<p>The Optogenerapy consortium is led by Eurecat and made up of eleven partners from seven European countries featuring research centres, universities and specialised companies. They include two Eurecat spin-offs, Neos Surgery and Ultrasion, ETH Zurich, Lodz University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam, the firms GeneXplain, ASE Optics Europe and Boston Scientific, research institute INSERM and the Spanish standardisation body UNE.<\/p>\n<p>Optogenerapy has lasted 37 months, had a budget of \u20ac6.2 million and been co-funded by \u20ac4,777,258 from the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 programme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Eurecat\u00a0technology centre has developed, within the Optogenerapy consortium, the first subcutaneous biophotonic implant using optogenetic technology to deliver doses of therapeutic proteins to patients with Multiple Sclerosis.
