This was the topic at Tuesday\u2019s\u00a0<strong>\u2018Optimal visitor management\u2019<\/strong>, conference organised by the Tourism Innovation and Intelligence Laboratory in <a href=\"http:\/\/eurecat.org\/\"><strong>Eurecat<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Tourism Innovation Department and <strong>Tarragona Provincial Council\u2019s Tourist Board<\/strong>\u00a0on the Costa Daurada and in Terres de l\u2019Ebre supported by <strong>Salou\u2019s Municipal Tourist Board<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Salvador Anton Clav\u00e9, director Eurecat\u2019s Tourism Innovation Department and Professor of Regional Geographical Analysis at Rovira i Virgili University, pointed out that \u201ctourism intelligence and understanding tourist behaviour are essential\u201d in order to meet the need to manage visitor movements and journeys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOptimal visitor management, which Tarragona Provincial Council\u2019s Tourist Board has been working on for some time now, will be crucial in ensuring the competitiveness of destinations and achieving sustainable and future-proof tourism development,\u201d said Marta Farrero, the director of Tarragona Provincial Council\u2019s Tourist Board.<\/p>\n<p>Pere Granados, Mayor of Salou and chair of the Municipal Tourist Board, noted that \u201cSalou has embarked on the road to becoming a smart and sustainable tourist destination\u201d and talked about key concepts such as responsible and inclusive tourism, mobility, dispersion measures and the destinations\u2019 natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>The event was held in the Sala Europa in Salou and included an inspirational conference, a panel discussion and a roundtable showcasing tourism industry projects. Together they unpacked the role of marketing as a key factor in shaping tourist behaviour in a destination and the need to manage visitor movements and journeys, especially after increasingly frequent instances of overcrowding in environmentally sensitive areas.<\/p>\n<p>Eulogi Bordas, chair of <strong>THR Tourism Industry Advisors<\/strong>, explored the paradigm shift in tourism which entails evolving visitor management models to address the tourism industry\u2019s challenges. This is because \u201cthe \u2018new normal\u2019 will more than ever call for integrated management of the \u2018sustainable prosperity\u2019 of tourist destinations by bringing in numerous changes in value propositions, customer journey management, marketing, the circular economy, environmental aesthetics management, system performance measurement, governance and leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The panel discussion \u201cCommunication, a key tool in efficient flow planning\u201d featured Maria Fernanda (Nani) Arenas, a journalist specialising in travel and tourism communication and CEO of <strong>Mil Words Comunicaci\u00f3n S.L,\u00a0<\/strong>Juan Castro, the CEO of\u00a0<strong>CastroConsulting\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Viajarenfamilia.net<\/strong>, and Mabel Cajal, a tourism and digital marketing <strong>consultant<\/strong>. Ignacio de las Cuevas, Operations Director in <strong>Eurecat\u2019s Tourism Innovation Department<\/strong>, moderated and facilitated the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>At the projects roundtable, Sira Puig, director of <strong>Sitges Tourism<\/strong>\u00a0at Sitges Town Council, Gumersindo Guinarte, Cabinet Officer for <strong>Tourism in Santiago de Compostela<\/strong>, Turina Serra, manager of\u00a0<strong>Tourism Garrotxa<\/strong>, and Xavier Panisello, head of the Innovation and Data Governance Unit at <strong>Salou Town Council<\/strong>, shared their experiences in tourism planning to unlock sustainable destination development.
