The conversion of CO2 and waste into high-value products, whether energy or biofuels, and energy digitalisation in businesses are two of the technologies most sought after by the industrial sector according to the R+D+i Network Energy for Society (XRE4S) which includes the Eurecat technology centre.<\/p>\n
This network is made up of 39 research groups from Catalonia\u2019s leading universities and technology and research centres. It has presented businesses with its portfolio of over 30 innovative technological solutions in the energy segment which they can build into their organisations to become more efficient.<\/p>\n
The firms were also keen to improve battery processes and materials and put in place energy optimisation and digitalisation tools for systems and buildings.<\/p>\n
Over 30 videos explain in layman\u2019s language each of the technologies developed by XRE4S. They include renewable solar and wind power generation, energy technology integration, power converters and digitalisation, new materials and devices and solutions to enhance energy efficiency.<\/p>\n
Besides the videos, XRE4S has also hosted webinars in conjunction with several clusters and business platforms to share solutions to companies\u2019 energy needs. \u201cBusinesses need innovation but they find it hard to pinpoint which solutions are feasible for them,\u201d says Joana Tarr\u00e9s, promoter of XRE4S. \u201cOur network has been devised to provide this connection with academia which is developing tomorrow\u2019s solutions and technological proposals today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Technologies in the marketing stage<\/strong><\/p>\n The technologies presented have been developed by the research centres and universities making up XRE4S: IREC, BSC, CIMNE, Eurecat, ICIQ, ICMAB- CSIC, IMB-CSIC, ICN2, La Salle-Ramon Llull University, University of Barcelona, University of Vic-Central University of Catalonia, University of Lleida, University of Girona and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.<\/p>\n These centres have developed solutions such as using 3D printing technology to manufacture more efficient fuel cells which helps roll out hydrogen as an energy vector (IREC); an electronic controller for motorbike or hybrid vehicle batteries (CITCEA-UPC); harnessing supercomputing to map areas of Catalonia with geothermal energy extraction potential (BSC); leveraging algorithms to identify and predict local energy usage using a postcode (CIMNE), and converting animal waste into biofuels (CT BETA- UVic-UCC).<\/p>\n Some of the technologies have been transferred to spin-offs set up by the research centres and are already in the marketing stage. Others are in the process of being licensed to third parties or finding the most suitable market for successful uptake.<\/p>\n Some of the solutions identified have been advised about market and sales strategies by \u0327XRE4S\u2019s Lab-to-Market (L2M) programme.
