They include weather forecasting, phenology identification and projection, disease risk prediction and treatment recommendations, building crop and yield prediction indicators, streamlining resource management and sustainability indicator monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>Eurecat\u2019s Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit will draw on artificial intelligence techniques to analyse and integrate multiple data sources to develop new services for managing fungal diseases, optimising resources and monitoring sustainability indicators in order to make wine-growing businesses more productive.<\/p>\n<p>Funded by the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 programme, the VitiGEOSS project integrates and enhances existing solutions by coupling satellite imagery with in-field sensors to enhance the resolution and reliability of satellite information applied to all aspects of winemaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVitiGEOSS will build an ecosystem of agronomic management support services for vine growing into a single platform,\u201d says Josep Pijuan, a researcher at Eurecat\u2019s Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit. \u201cThis will make it possible to add new services in the future while also delivering its services to other tools on the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will push agricultural recommendation forward by developing an ecosystem of services for the wine industry,\u201d adds Rosa Araujo, VitiGEOSS Project Coordinator and Project Manager at the Eurecat technology centre. \u201cThey will help farmers and producers, optimise sustainable vine cultivation through decision support systems for weather and climate forecasting, phenology, diseases and business operations, and by extension leveraging open European data and resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are validating the potential of integrating the capabilities of satellite imagery services, aerial imagery and in-field sensor and machinery data using artificial intelligence to foster better field and vineyard management and planning along with optimising innovative farming practices,\u201d notes Xavier Domingo, the director of Eurecat\u2019s Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit. \u201cOpen resources such as Earth observation services provide easier access to new sources of information which can make vineyards more efficient via new status and production indicators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The European Union is currently the world\u2019s largest wine producer and making wine is the primary economic activity in many parts of southern Europe. The innovation driven by VitiGEOSS seeks to meet the future challenges of the wine industry by sustainably stepping up production while mitigating the effects of climate change, reducing adverse environmental impacts and unlocking local economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>The VitiGEOSS project consortium is made up of nine partners from Spain, Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands.
