The aim is to recover resources such as biogas, nutrients, organic fertilisers and reclaimed water and also to reduce its environmental impact in a circular economy approach.<\/p>\n<p>The system will use a process combining several biological treatment and filtration technologies to demonstrate \u201cthe environmental, technical and economic feasibility of recovering high-value resources available in this wastewater,\u201d says Xavier Mart\u00ednez Llad\u00f3, director of Eurecat\u2019s Water, Air and Soil Unit.<\/p>\n<p>The project is looking to enhance current treatment of the liquid digestate generated by municipal organic waste treatment by rolling out an array of technological processes to recover the nutrients, energy and water in these waste effluents. The organic matter will be turned into biogas, which can be purified to biomethane and has applications as biofuel for vehicles, fertilisers for agriculture, and reclaimed water which can be used for agricultural irrigation or in industrial processes.<\/p>\n<p>The system will be validated at the Ecoparc waste management centres in Montcada i Reixac, Barcelona, and at the Cogersa facilities in Gij\u00f3n, Asturias.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis innovative treatment approach is designed to be extrapolated on a real scale and replicable for other waste management plants,\u201d says Carme Bosch, the Infusion project\u2019s technical coordinator and head of Eurecat\u2019s Soil and Groundwater strand.<\/p>\n<p>The project (LIFE19 ENV\/ES\/000283) is funded by the European Union under the LIFE programme and has a \u20ac3,119,601 budget. The project consortium is made up of Eurecat, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amb.cat\/s\/home.html\"> Barcelona Metropolitan Area<\/a>\u00a0(AMB),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqualia.com\/ca\/web\/aqualia-ca\">Aqualia<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogersa.es\/metaspace\/portal\/14498\/14519-inicio\">Cogersa<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amb.cat\/web\/ecologia\/residus\/instalacions-i-equipaments\/detall\/-\/equipament\/ecoparc-montcada-i-reixac\/352170\/11818\">Ebesa<\/a>\u00a0(Ecoparc del Bes\u00f2s), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irta.cat\/ca\/\">Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology <\/a>\u00a0(IRTA),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/detricon.eu\/\">Detricon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amiu.genova.it\/\">AMIU G\u00e8nova<\/a>, organisations from Spain, Belgium and Italy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Eurecat\u00a0technology centre is coordinating the\u00a0Life Infusion\u00a0project which seeks to demonstrate and validate a new system for\u00a0purifying wastewater\u00a0from the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste on a pilot scale.
