{"id":127214,"date":"2022-06-29T13:00:24","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T12:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/creen-bateries-vehicles-electrics-mes-lleugeres-sostenibles-i-lliures-de-materials-critics\/"},"modified":"2022-10-17T14:38:01","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T13:38:01","slug":"creating-lighter-more-sustainable-electric-vehicle-batteries-free-from-critical-materials-such-as-cobalt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/creating-lighter-more-sustainable-electric-vehicle-batteries-free-from-critical-materials-such-as-cobalt\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating lighter, more sustainable electric vehicle batteries free from critical materials such as cobalt"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1424.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\" style=\"--awb-text-transform:none;\"><p>BATTECH, southern Europe\u2019s leading centre in battery R&amp;D, is taking part in the Battery Show Europe fair, held this week in Stuttgart, where it will present the latest innovations in the field of e-mobility, with projects aimed at developing batteries for electric vehicles that are lighter, more sustainable and free from critical materials such as cobalt.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsored and founded by the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irec.cat\/\">IREC<\/a>) and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eurecat.org\/\">Eurecat<\/a> technology centre, BATTECH provides specialised research, development, testing and innovation in the field of batteries to boost knowledge transfer to industry in this field, from a perspective focused on the circular economy and sustainability to cover the entire battery value chain as a leading R&amp;D centre.<\/p>\n<p>Alberto G\u00f3mez, BATTECH\u2019s technology lead, notes that this joint research unit \u2018covers everything from developing the materials that make up the cells, as fundamental parts of the batteries, to integrating large batteries into energy systems and sustainable mobility, as well as battery second life and recycling\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In this vein, the European MARBEL project, coordinated by Eurecat, is developing a new lighter and more sustainable battery concept with higher energy density and shorter charging times to fast-track mass market adoption of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, G\u00f3mez, who is also the technical coordinator of the MARBEL project, explains that, to achieve this, a new compact, modular, weight-optimised and high-performance battery pack will be designed, developed and manufactured, designed from the outset with a view to second use and recyclability. It will feature \u2018longer life and greater energy efficiency in charging and energy use based on a robust and flexible battery management system (BMS) along with ultra-fast charging\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The COBRA\u00a0project, on the other hand, led by the IREC, is developing a new unique and cobalt-free battery system that combines various features, including superior energy density, low cost, increased cycles and reduced critical materials to overcome many of the current shortcomings in electric vehicle batteries.<\/p>\n<p>The COBRA coordinator at the IREC, Jordi Jacas, emphasises that \u2018cobalt is a scarce and polluting material and we\u2019re really close to being able to replace this critical element without losing any battery performance\u2019. Moreover, \u2018we put a lot of effort into improving the environmental sustainability of the overall system to reduce its carbon footprint\u2019, he adds.<\/p>\n<p>For Jacas, the project\u2019s innovation \u2018ensures easy adaptation to production lines and higher market uptake, while it also helps to strengthen Europe\u2019s position in this
