Eight research teams, including Eurecat, have been chosen for their proposals to improve energy efficiency and promote local energy production during the second edition of Lab to Market (L2M), an initiative promoted by the Energy for Society<\/em>\u00a0R&D Network\u00a0(XRE4S<\/a>) with the aim of helping participants identify technologies with potential for commercialisation.<\/p>\n

In the second edition that has just finished, the research teams that took part in the initiative are part of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the Eurecat technology centre, the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), the University of Girona (UdG), the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the University of Lleida and Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC).<\/p>\n

\u2018Eurecat is part of XRE4S, a network of Catalan energy research entities that, through the Lab to Market (L2M) programme, has helped us to make progress with transferring and exploiting this energy technology in industry and society\u2019, points out Ricard Garcia Valls, the director of the Chemical Technology Unit.<\/p>\n

Joana Tarr\u00e9s, the XRE4S lead, explained that all the technologies \u2018contribute to the energy transition\u2019, whether by \u2018improving the production of energy using low-carbon technologies, energy efficiency or integrating renewables into smart power grids\u2019. \u2018These technologies contribute to reducing energy demand and to local energy production, improving management and control\u2019, she affirmed.<\/p>\n

Highlights of the selected projects include a self-sufficient power generator that runs on formic acid produced by capturing CO2<\/sub>, an economic and innovative method of producing electrodes to improve electrode efficiency and performance in water electrolysis and, on the other hand, an advanced supercapacitor manufacturing system. As for the area of energy efficiency, a transverse cooling system for thermal management problems, a renewable heating and cooling production system in the same building and heat pump management and monitoring algorithms were presented. In the smart electricity grid sector, a portable charger for electric cars stands out.<\/p>\n

In this regard, Tarr\u00e9s remarked that these projects are in line with the demand from the market, which calls for technologies \u2018in the field of digitalisation, energy efficiency, hydrogen generation and the circular economy\u2019.<\/p>\n

Success of the first editions<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than 400 potential companies were identified in the first two editions of the programme, held between 2020 and 2021, of which around 50 were involved in the technologies presented. Of the 16 technologies assessed up to now, three have plans to create a spin-off, while the rest are more focused on finding potential licensees or co-developers.<\/p>\n

The Lab to Market programme offers personalised assistance for the researchers who are part of the network and are looking to exploit or transfer a technology in the field of energy.<\/p>\n

In the initial phase, an expert committee does a pre-assessment of the technologies to determine the degree of innovation, the level of intellectual protection and the potential for commercialisation. Next, there is a personalised and detailed assessment on market strategy, business model and intellectual property protection strategy for a limited number of technologies that have passed the initial phase. Moreover, the programme offers a guide aimed at researchers with tips for transferring technologies from the laboratory to the market. The final aim is to help the groups protect the innovations, find licensees or exploit the technology through a spin-off.<\/p>\n

Daniel Montesinos, the director of the CITCEA-UPC research and innovation centre, and the CITCEA-UPC researcher Maci\u00e0 Cap\u00f3 stressed that participating in the second edition of the programme has been useful for them to give more visibility to the technology they have developed, to get in touch with industry companies and exploit their technology, achieving the goal of transferring their activity to society.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Carme Carrera, the head of the University of Lleida\u2019s Exploitation Unit, noted that the programme has represented an opportunity \u2018to give researchers a better understanding of the market they\u2019re targeting and their fit\u2019. \u2018In addition, in some cases, synergies have been created with the activities being developed in other exploitation and transfer support programmes, as they end up being complementary and providing great value with a view to their transfer\u2019, she added.<\/p>\n

Third edition<\/strong><\/p>\n

Looking ahead to the 2022 edition, which kicks off this March, the expert committee has already selected eight new technologies from the IREC, UPC, UdG and ICMAB-CSIC that will take part in the third edition of L2M. Moreover, XRE4S has launched new programmes that will complement L2M, such as\u00a0IP Services & Transfer<\/em>\u00a0to provide more support for the industrial and intellectual property protection aspect. The\u00a0Technology Business Development<\/em>, programme has also been created for the third edition, focused on getting partner companies or possible licensees, as well as the\u00a0Entrepreneurship<\/em>\u00a0programme to support the teams that want to create a spin-off, through specialised mentoring.<\/p>\n

A network that includes 41 Catalan research groups<\/strong><\/p>\n

XRE4S, led by the IREC, includes 41 research groups from 14 universities, technology and research centres in Catalonia. In total, it brings together more than 500 researchers who work in the areas of low-carbon technologies, electricity grids and distribution and energy efficiency.<\/p>\n

Manel Sanmart\u00ed, the director of XRE4S, emphasised that, currently, \u2018XRE4S is an ecosystem for transfer between research and the productive and social environment in the energy sector, and it\u2019s a key element for improving the competitiveness of the energy sector and the deployment of a low-emission society\u2019. \u2018We want to increase the impact of this transfer in the productive and social sector in Catalonia and turn it into an international focal point for energy innovation\u2019, he added.<\/p>\n

XRE4S is a project co-funded by the European Union\u2019s European Regional Development Fund in the framework of Catalonia\u2019s 2014-2020 ERDF Operational Programme, with support from the Secretariat for Universities and Research of the Government of Catalonia\u2019s Ministry of Business and
