Industrial decarbonisation<\/strong> is a priority for the government, businesses and scientific and technological stakeholders who are committed to working together to fast-track a process which will enable progress towards climate neutrality while safeguarding industrial competitiveness and associated jobs. This was the main message at the conference on industrial decarbonisation held this Monday, organised by Rovira i Virgili University (URV), the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), the Eurecat technology centre and the Chemical Business Association of Tarragona (AEQT), which was attended by some 200 people.<\/p>\n

The URV, ICIQ and Eurecat have come together for this goal and put in place a preeminent science, technology, innovation and training centre for industrial decarbonisation.\u202fEmilio Palomares, director of the ICIQ, the institution which hosted the conference, and Josep Pallar\u00e8s, rector of the URV, restated their commitment to research and knowledge transfer in this field and stressed that the makeup of the conference, featuring representatives from all sectors, shows that it is through cooperation with everyone playing their own role that the challenge of industrial decarbonisation and climate neutrality can be met.<\/p>\n

Albert Castellanos, Secretary for Enterprise and Competitiveness in the Government of Catalonia, also underscored the importance of taking on the challenge together and the fact that it is being led by Tarragona where decarbonisation and renewable hydrogen projects are already underway. \u201cWe all need to team up and be open-minded about the solutions. It\u2019s about curbing global warming while also being competitive in business terms which we can do by committing to sustainability and energy efficiency,\u201d asserted Castellanos, who praised the role of working sessions, such as the one held on Monday, which lead to public-private solutions. Castellanos also mentioned the Catalan Centre for the Decarbonisation of Industry, which he described as a \u201cpragmatic response to pressing challenges,\u201d and the new decarbonisation Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation scheduled for September. He further reiterated the Catalan Government\u2019s commitment to helping businesses make the ecological transition.<\/p>\n

Mireia Boya, director general of Environmental Quality and Climate Change in the Catalan Government, stressed that meeting international sustainability commitments is above all an opportunity for savings, a market and hence competitiveness for businesses. Boya pointed out that there has been a 36% fall in C0\u2082 emissions up to 2023, \u201cwhich means that companies have got their act together\u201d, but there is nonetheless still a long way to go to hit a 63% reduction by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. The Climate Change Act, which the Catalan government is just rolling out, will be crucial here. \u201cWe all have to get involved, including the public and the business community backed by the government,\u201d she argued.<\/p>\n

Xavier L\u00f3pez, Chief Operating and Corporate Officer at Eurecat, emphasised \u201cthe importance of working as an ecosystem with the University, research and technology centres and industry covering the entire value chain up to the implementation of large-scale industrial solutions.\u201d He thinks that another crucial factor is enhancing the technological independence of industry in the region so that technologies can be generated there.<\/p>\n

Ignasi Ca\u00f1agueral, chair of the Chemical Business Association of Tarragona (AEQT) and director of DOW in Tarragona, stressed the need to map out CO\u2082 capture, use and storage projects to ensure the industry stays competitive and in which government will play a key role through aid and mechanisms. Ca\u00f1agueral also believes that progress has to be made in tune with society. \u201cWe seek strategic autonomy in Tarragona to work for Europe with the finest technologies yet always backed by social support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lourdes Vega, director of the Research and Innovation Center on CO\u2082 and H\u2082 at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, unpacked the present and future of industrial decarbonisation, arguing that progress has been made in decarbonisation in recent years although there is still a lot of room for improvement. \u201cWe need to make sweeping changes with investment and inspiring projects,\u201d said Vega, who pointed to the role that renewable energies and energy efficiency need to play alongside other pathways to decarbonisation such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide capture and electrification.<\/p>\n

The event featured two panel discussions, one on the industrial perspective of decarbonisation and the other on the scientific and technological standpoint, and was rounded off with a visit to the laboratories, pilot plants and R&D and innovation projects underway at the URV, the ICIQ and Eurecat.<\/p>\n

Tarragona, a research hub<\/strong><\/p>\n

The conference thus showcased how the Tarragona area has become the core of this industrial decarbonisation with a Catalan and European reach. The ICIQ, Eurecat and the URV are supporting it with over 200 researchers and technologists who work in experimental sciences, engineering and social sciences across the value chain, from basic to applied science, the industrial scalability of the technology and joint projects with industries in all sectors, including those making up southern Europe\u2019s largest chemical hub.<\/p>\n

The URV, the ICIQ and Eurecat have research groups of excellence working on chemical reactivity, sustainable processes and energy coupled with characterisation and reactivity led by research teams. They have developed technologies such as membranes, adsorbents, catalysts and bioreagents and run advanced reactors to produce chemicals and synthetic fuels from carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen together with laboratories for developing circular solutions in products and processes.\u202fThis knowledge and infrastructure are designed to furnish Catalan industry with technological solutions which enable it to decarbonise its production processes.<\/p>\n
