First, it captures CO<sub>2<\/sub> from flue gases using selective patented membranes, generating a concentrated CO<sub>2<\/sub> stream. Second, this CO<sub>2<\/sub> is converted into syngas (a mixture of CO and H2) through a photoelectrocatalytic reaction. Finally, the syngas is used in hydroformylation reactions with olefins to produce the desired oxo-chemicals used in cosmetics and food production.<\/p>\n<p>SunCoChem aims to employ a photoelectrochemical pathway for the conversion of CO<sub>2<\/sub> into CO, serving as an intermediate for chemical carbonylation synthesis. Adrianna Nogalska, the project\u2019s scientific coordinator and Head of Hydrogen Technologies at Eurecat\u2019s Chemical Technology Unit, emphasizes that this innovative solution has the potential to significantly reduce carbon footprints in industrial processes, thereby facilitating the transition to a more sustainable and greener future of the society.<\/p>\n<p>The system has been tested in laboratory, to produce Limoxal\u2122, a material sold by IFF as a perfuming agent and used in personal care and household cleaning products. Life cycle assessment studies have shown that this reactor can reduce carbon emissions by 25% compared to current fossil fuel-based methods, due to its reliance on renewable carbon sources.<\/p>\n<p>The success of the project is driven by a multidisciplinary consortium, whose diverse expertise and collaborative efforts have been key to advancing innovative, sustainable solutions for the chemical industry. Funded by the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 programme, the SunCoChem project consists of a consortium of 14 partners from eight European countries including technology and research centres: <a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/eurecat\/\">Eurecat<\/a>, which is coordinating the project, the Politecnico di Torino, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/helmholtz-zentrum-berlin-fur-materialien-und-energie\/\">Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin f\u00fcr Materialien und Energie GmbH<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/istituto-italiano-di-tecnologia\/\">Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia<\/a>\u00a0 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/national-centre-for-scientific-research-cnrs\/\"> the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS)<\/a>;\u00a0small and medium-sized enterprises developing advanced materials and technologies in <a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/solaronix\/\">Solaronix<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/avantium-chemicals\/\">Avantium<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/laurentia\/\">Laurentia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/iolitec\/\">IOLITEC<\/a>; engineering firm <a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/hysytech\/\">Hysytech<\/a>;\u00a0chemical corporations <a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/dow\/\">Dow<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/iff\/\">IFF<\/a>; and operational support partners: the Spanish Association for Standardisation (<a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/une\/\">UNE<\/a>)\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/suncochem.eu\/project\/international-hellenic-university\/\">International Hellenic University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":162697,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2298,743,2330],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-161754","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-energy","category-press-notes-en","category-quimica-en"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
