Artificial intelligence, biotechnology and robotics applied to agriculture and livestock farming and improving efficiency in the use of natural resources and food transformation processes are just some of the areas in which the Eurecat technology centre conducts technological innovation projects to make the agri-food sector and rural areas more competitive, where it is helping more and more businesses to embrace standout technologies.<\/p>\n

The impact of these technology projects and solutions was showcased in June to \u00d2scar Ordeig, Catalan Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, and Anna Castellv\u00ed, Director of Barcelona Regional Services, during a working meeting and visit to Eurecat\u2019s Cerdanyola site where they were hosted by Daniel Altimiras, Eurecat\u2019s chair; Xavier L\u00f3pez, the technology centre\u2019s Chief Operating and Corporate Officer; Myriam Garc\u00eda-Berro, Research and Technology director; and Gabriel Anzaldi, Ecosystems director and Eurecat Lleida manager.<\/p>\n

At the meeting, Eurecat presented its geographical coverage which in Catalonia is made up of eleven sites in Barcelona, Canet de Mar, Cerdanyola del Vall\u00e8s, Girona, Lleida, Manresa, Matar\u00f3, Reus, Tarragona, Amposta and Vila-seca shaping its technological and multi-sector convergence capability for delivering innovative solutions to meet the challenges, needs and opportunities of businesses in the agri-food industry and rural areas.<\/p>\n

Eurecat also underscored its input of solutions anchored in expert knowledge for developing new products and in process efficiency by harnessing digital technologies, robotics applied to agriculture and livestock farming, innovations for sustainability and breakthroughs in biotechnology and digital health coupled with solutions in new materials, circularity and smart production processes<\/p>\n

During the visit, Daniel Serrano, director of Robotics at Eurecat, and Carlos Rizzo and \u00d2scar Palac\u00edn, experts in this unit, shared various agricultural robotisation projects undertaken by Eurecat which have led to applications for autonomous robotics and handling for use in companies. An example is the development of an autonomous robot designed for harvesting delicate fruit and vegetables which can detect maturity and size with real-time monitoring. Eurecat also runs cutting-edge projects combining robotics and intelligent systems that enable innovations including autonomous navigation and technological upgrading of tractors to equip them with autonomy.<\/p>\n

Eurecat, the food sector\u2019s partner for innovation with impact<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eurecat also shared with the minister its efforts to provide agri-food businesses with innovative technological solutions with a tangible impact and a quick return by teaming up with the agri-food business network, especially SMEs, to help them from the idea to industrial validation, including functional biotechnology, sustainability, artificial intelligence, advanced packaging and robotics.<\/p>\n

Here, Eurecat is a bridge between science and the market, expediting the transition of the rapidly changing food tech sector as companies need technological solutions which are scalable, cost-effective and aligned with regulations and environmental challenges.<\/p>\n

Some of the food industry\u2019s technological challenges are in sustainability, production efficiency, smart resource management, health and catering to increasingly discerning and well-informed consumers. As a result, Eurecat drives solutions that shrink the environmental footprint, enhance the use of raw materials, ramp up resilience to climate change, digitalise the entire value chain and help develop healthier and more functional foods backed up by scientific evidence.<\/p>\n

Innovation for sustainability, circularity and efficient resource management<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the case of innovation for the environment and sustainability, Eurecat also designs solutions to step up efficiency in natural resource use and in generating and managing renewable energy. A recent example is the development of semi-transparent solar panels used in greenhouses to generate energy and optimise light for growing crops.<\/p>\n

Other Eurecat agricultural digitalisation projects have translated into applications for efficient resource management, ranging from water and the workforce to fleets and traceability.<\/p>\n

Advanced training and support for technology initiatives in rural areas<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eurecat also runs bespoke advanced training programmes for businesses, entrepreneurs and public authorities featuring headline initiatives such as AgroEmpr\u00e8n, Empr\u00e8n BIO 4.0, Girona Hub and Local Products Hub to foster local technological entrepreneurship plus Agriculture 4.0 courses.<\/p>\n

It additionally operates the Hazelnut Technical Office to further initiatives backing the hazelnut industry with tastings, school promotion and business support and further sponsors the Ruralapps Awards which recognise technological initiatives in rural areas.<\/p>\n

There is also training for the Agri-environmental Learning and Development Centre in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food with courses on artificial intelligence applied to the farming sector.<\/p>\n

Towards a more resilient, competitive and sustainable food industry<\/strong><\/p>\n
