Specifically, \u201cred onion skin and vine pruning extracts increased the expression of genes related to collagen synthesis, while vine pruning extract also demonstrated the ability to significantly reduce the gene expression of a key protein in inflammatory processes,\u201d adds Dr Roger Marin\u00e9, also a researcher in Eurecat\u2019s Nutrition and Health Unit.<\/p>\n<p>The research tapped advanced extraction technologies with green, sustainable and environmentally-friendly solvents. The extracts were also tested in advanced <em>in vitro<\/em> 3D human skin models, an innovative and physiologically relevant system which allows for evaluations more closely aligned with human conditions while lessening reliance on animal testing in research.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cis the first study to combine a green extraction technique, subcritical water extraction, with a three-dimensional model of human skin mimicking its layers,\u201d explains Dr Xavier Escot\u00e9, a collaborator at Eurecat\u2019s Nutrition and Health Unit and lecturer at Rovira i Virgili University. \u201cThis is a step forward in developing sustainable cosmetic bioactives with potential applications in photoprotection, anti-ageing and revalorising agri-food waste through the circular economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe research paves the way for potential applications of residual biomass from agricultural processes for sustainable reuse in sectors such as cosmetics and food to improve people\u2019s health and well-being,\u201d comments Sara G\u00f3mez, director of Eurecat\u2019s Nutrition and Health Unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study demonstrates Eurecat\u2019s commitment to capacity building and using alternatives to animal testing, evolving from simple single-cell systems to increasingly complex models which more accurately reproduce the behaviour of human organs,\u201d adds Antoni Caimari, Director of Eurecat\u2019s Biotechnology Area. \u201cThis enables us to stay at the forefront in nutrition and health, offering robust alternatives to the use of animals to evaluate the functionality of ingredients, nutraceuticals and other bioactive compounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Phenolexa project, funded by the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 programme, is a European initiative based on processing various types of agricultural waste to produce a suite of novel functional polyphenolic bioactives with beneficial properties for human health. Eurecat\u2019s Nutrition and Health Unit has also demonstrated the antiviral potential of some of these extracts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1420-3049\/30\/8\/1806\">another scientific paper<\/a> just published in the journal <em>Molecules<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The project consortium, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/civitta.com\/\">CIVITTA<\/a>, is made up of 12 partners from several European countries: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novatica-tech.com\/\">Novatica<\/a> Technologies, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.it\/en\">Italian National Research Council (CNR)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartif.es\/\">CARTIF Technology Centre<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celabor.be\/landing.php?lang=fr\">Celabor<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umk.pl\/en\/\">Nicolaus <\/a>Copernicus University of Torun (Poland), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/\">University of <\/a>Loughborough in the United Kingdom, <a href=\"https:\/\/bionigree.pl\/\">Bionigree<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/e-p-c.de\/en\/home-en\/\">EPC-Project Corporation <\/a>Climate association, the <a href=\"https:\/\/paca.chambres-agriculture.fr\/\">Regional Chamber of Agriculture of <\/a>Provence Alpes C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carinsa.com\/ca\/\">Carinsa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":187917,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2295,429,743],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-189929","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-food","category-nutrition-and-health","category-press-notes-en"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
