The research aims to improve understanding of fatigue behaviour in metallic materials exposed to hydrogen, a phenomenon of growing relevance in the context of offshore renewable energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The study focuses on martensitic high-strength steel, the material used in mooring chains for offshore wind turbines, which is protected from corrosion through cathodic polarisation.<\/p>\n<p>This protection, however, introduces hydrogen into the metal, potentially affecting its mechanical integrity and fatigue life. Using the self-heating method, a fast characterisation technique based on temperature measurements during cyclic loading. The research quantifies the dissipated energy in hydrogen-charged specimens and compares it to uncharged base material.<\/p>\n<p>Experimental results indicate that hydrogen charging leads to lower dissipated energy in the secondary regime and an earlier onset of fracture, alongside increased scatter in the self-heating curves.
