Eurecat’s Technology Center (member of Tecnio) launches the programme “Vicente López” aimed at promoting the production of doctoral theses in its industrial, digital and biotechnological areas, in order to increase scientific knowledge in these fields and foster technology transfer to the industry.
Submission of Applications:
All candidates must submit their applications via the Eurecat website (http://www.eurecat.org) in accordance with the procedures specified there and in the application process.
Selection process:
A committee that has been specifically created for each research position will select candidates. The committee will comprise the proposed thesis directors, the head of Eurecat’ s Technology Unit for the knowledge area in question, and a recruitment specialist from Eurecat’ s Human Resources Department.
The committees will select candidates for each research position based primarily on their applications and their suitability for producing a doctoral thesis in the knowledge area in question. The committee members may wish to conduct a personal interview with the candidates.
The committees will draw up a prioritized list of those candidates they have assessed favorably. All applicants will be informed as to whether their application has been successful or unsuccessful. Submission of an application implies the acceptance of these rules.
Applicant requirements:
Applications may be submitted by anyone who is qualified and able to begin an official doctoral program in accordance with the regulations in force. Consequently, applicants must possess an official university undergraduate degree and Master’s degree (whether issued by a Spanish university or another institution within the European Higher Education Area) that qualifies them to access a doctoral program under the terms of article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007 of 29 October.
They must also have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits as part of their official university studies, of which at least 60 must have been at Master’s degree level. Applications are also welcomed from those who are enrolled in an official university master’s degree that allows them to access the doctorate in the 2023-2024 academic year can apply. All applicants must demonstrate a good level of English.
Applicants must be of Spanish nationality or hold an official work permit enabling them to be employed, upon commencement of their participation in the program.
In order to ensure their participation in the program in person and in situ, the trainee researchers must reside in Catalonia for the duration of the program, except for when they embark on study visits to other universities or research centers as part of their doctoral studies.
Dr. Vicente López
This programme is named after Dr. Vicente López Martínez in honour of his contribution to innovation in Catalonia and his tireless work to promote links between universities, technology centres and companies. Vicente López was not only the founder of the Barcelona Media technology centre, which today forms part of Eurecat; he was also an outstanding researcher, manager and entrepreneur.
Dr. Vicente López Biography
Vicente López Martínez (1954 – 2012) was a great promoter of innovation in Catalonia betting on applied research based on the model Universities – Technological Centers – Companies. He was the founder of the Barcelona Media Technology Center, which today forms part of Eurecat. Initially, he acted as the General Director and later as Executive Vice President of the Center. He also was Vice President of the Federation of Technology Centers (FEDIT).
Graduated in Chemical Sciences, he gained a PhD in Quantum Chemistry from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). He remained active as a researcher throughout all his professional life, combining this activity with those of manager and entrepreneur. He was a researcher at the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), a Professor at the Department of Chemical Physics at the UAM, a researcher and later technical director of the Institute of Knowledge Engineering (IIC) of the UAM, professor at UAM’s Department of Computational Sciences and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) Department of Information Technology and Communications, publishing more than 50 scientific articles.
As an entrepreneur and innovator, Vicente created and launched two technology companies for the Prisa group: Proel (electronic publicity) and Inicia Comunicaciones (provider of internet services and portals). Co-founder and later a member of the board of directors of Raditech, a provider of services and research products on the Internet, he was a member of Telefónica’s board and founded ImmSound, a provider of immersive sound products, where he acted as CEO and President. Immsound was later acquired by Dolby.
Besides being a charismatic person, Vicente possessed a great humanistic sense that he applied in his various activities. He managed Barcelona Media with commitment, vision and constant work from its beginnings and from there he supported and encouraged the Technological Center model as a meeting point between Universities, Research Centers and Companies, a bridge between basic research and industrial applications.
