The Eurecat technology centre has set up a multidisciplinary team bringing together expertise in quantum physics, artificial intelligence and software development to help companies unlock the potential of quantum computing, which is expected to have an economic impact in excess of €1 trillion over the next 10 years.
The report on technology trends in 2025 by ACCIÓ, the Catalan Government’s Agency for Business Competitiveness, points to quantum computing as one of the key technologies which will shape the year and identifies Eurecat as one of the main players in quantum technologies in Catalonia.
The Eurecat technology centre delivers quantum software solutions to help researchers, engineers and companies to work out highly complex problems which until now have been unsolvable with traditional computing.
“We are keen to make quantum innovation more accessible to companies because it will have a major impact in the medium and long term on many sectors such as medicine with new drugs and personalised therapies; creating new materials; finance; the chemical industry; logistics; energy; cybersecurity, territorial management and more,” says Adan Garriga, lead researcher in Eurecat’s Quantum Computing Research Line. The initiative comes at the start of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology which UNESCO has scheduled for 2025 and is designed to raise public awareness about the significance of quantum science and its applications.
Eurecat has been involved in the team drawing up the Quantum Strategy of Catalonia and in major quantum technology projects such as the AI4ES network of excellence in data-driven enabling technologies and the Cervera ARQA network of excellence.
The ARQA Network is the partnership of technology centres for innovation in quantum computing applications for business. It sets out a technology roadmap to address highly complex practical problems faced by the Spanish and international industrial community in terms of their production model by examining the viability and efficiency of applying quantum computing techniques.
Eurecat has knowhow “in quantum machine learning, quantum optimisation, cybersecurity and consultancy and delivers quantum software development and advisory services to enterprises on how to roll out quantum computing technologies in their businesses,” adds Lali Soler, director of Eurecat’s Digital Area.
