The Eurecat technology centre will anticipate, next September 17th, technological solutions for the production of synthetic biofuels for aviation at an event in Lleida organised by the H2CAT network, the Catalan renewable hydrogen network coordinated by Eurecat.

The event, presented in a demo day format, will feature live demonstrations of innovation projects aimed at boosting aviation and sustainable mobility in industry, that will take place at Lleida–Alguaire Airport.

Specifically, Eurecat will present new aviation fuels made from used oils, and from the combination of captured CO₂ and green hydrogen. The event will demonstrate how these materials can be converted into sustainable aviation kerosene through different innovative processes, with the aim of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“At Eurecat we have distinctive technologies for CO₂ capture and reuse, green hydrogen and advanced catalysts which, through our specially designed pilot plants, allow us to accelerate the scaling-up of solutions for industry and drive sectors such as aeronautics and sustainable mobility,” says Gabriel Anzaldi, Director of Technological Ecosystems at Eurecat and Managing Director of Eurecat Lleida. “Holding this event in Lleida is particularly relevant because it connects this technological potential with the region’s bioeconomy strategy and strengthens the path towards decarbonisation and the circular economy,” he adds.

During the event, Eurecat will participate in the technology demonstration and networking area of the H2CAT network’s research groups alongside industry companies, presenting innovations in hydrogen and in CO2 utilisation. Among these, will showcase a pilot equipment powered by sunlight that enables the transformation of CO₂ and water into a gas useful for industry. This gas can be used in various processes, such as the production of sustainable fuels, and opens the door to applications in the agri-food sector, by using the CO₂ generated during the fermentation of waste to reduce emissions and advance sustainability.

The Demo Day, organised by the H2CAT network with the collaboration of Aeroports de Catalunya, the Clúster de l’Energia Eficient de Catalunya and ACCIÓ, the agency for business competitiveness, “reinforces the shared commitment to advance the reduction of emissions in air mobility and generating new industrial opportunities in the region,” explains the Director of the H2CAT network and of Eurecat’s Chemical Technology Unit, Miriam Díaz de los Bernardos.

H2CAT, the Catalan Renewable Hydrogen Innovation Network coordinated by Eurecat, has as its main mission to drive innovation and scalability in key industries to position Catalonia as a leading global region in green hydrogen. The network integrates the infrastructures and technological capabilities in renewable hydrogen of 17 research entities across Catalonia, more than 80 groups and over 360 researchers, and offers a catalogue of more than 100 innovative technologies aimed at accelerating the energy transition.
