The Eurecat technology centre is seeking 80 volunteers aged between 40 and 70 with mild and persistent knee pain to evaluate the effect of a nutritional supplement on the reduction of joint pain, one of the most prevalent conditions in the population and a major cause of disability.

The project, called Agartrosis, will allow volunteers to “benefit from specialised follow-up by nutritionists through three face-to-face visits at Eurecat’s facilities in Reus and one follow-up telephone visit, over a three-month period, and access to a complete body composition study and two tests, at the beginning and at the end of the study,” explains Josefina Ruiz de Azua, a researcher in Eurecat’s Nutrition and Health Unit. Questionnaires and simple tests related to pain, functionality and stiffness of the hand and knee joints will also be carried out.

As noted by the Head of the Clinical Studies Line at Eurecat’s Nutrition and Health Unit, Anna Crescenti, “joint discomfort, such as knee pain, is one of the most prevalent conditions in the population and represents a major cause of disability, limiting function and mobility and impairing the quality of life of the adult population.”

The Agartrosis nutritional intervention study will be conducted at the facilities of Eurecat’s Nutrition and Health Unit in Reus, located opposite Sant Joan Hospital in Reus. Those interested in taking part can register online using the following form and direct any queries to the email address estudis@eurecat.org or by calling +34 636 944 723.

To take part in the study, “participants must meet certain requirements, such as not having certain diseases, including arthrosis, arthritis or osteoarthritis, not having undergone recent knee surgery, and not taking certain supplements,” explains researcher Josefina Ruiz de Azua.

Conducting nutritional intervention clinical studies to assess the functionality of ingredients, dietary supplements and products for the food industry helps to improve people’s wellbeing and health, and in optimizing the competitiveness of agri-food, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.
