The BIP-UPy project (bioactive polymers based on ureido-pyrimidinone) aims to develop new bioactive polymers for a new generation of biomedical implants. The project develops novel biomedical implants capable of providing specific bioactivities, biodegradable and mechanical efficiency according to its clinical application.
The new implants are developed with bioactive polymers based on ureido-pyrimidinone capable of providing specific bioactivities according to the required properties of the implants. It is expected that the biomaterials developed may be easily transferred to other biomedical applications relating to implantable devices.
In the first stage, the implants developed in this project will improve the quality of life of individuals who suffer intracranial aneurysms and women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and urinary stress incontinence (USI).
The improvement in the functionality of these new implants, along with their greater biocompatibility, will lead to a more favourable evolution for the patient, reducing the hospitalisation period and other risks related to current treatments. All these benefits will ultimately result in a greater quality of life for the patient and a decrease in the cost of medical care.
The project will enable Eurecat to consolidate its position in a continuously growing industry such as that of biomedical implants. The main technological centre of Catalonia will also increase its know-how in the processing of biomaterials as well as in the manufacture of instruments that allow for minimally invasive surgery.
