Towards healthier, more sustainable and inclusive Mediterranean food systems
The SHADES project transforms Mediterranean food systems towards healthier, more sustainable and inclusive models, and addresses the interplay between climate resilience, urban regeneration and health in cities across Europe and the MENA region.
SHADES responds to several current challenges in Mediterranean cities, such as the rise in unhealthy dietary habits, food waste, low food literacy among children and families, and the weak connection between urban consumers and local producers.
To tackle these challenges, the project rolls out its activities in five pilot cities with diverse cultural and socio-economic contexts, including Milan, Cornellà de Llobregat and Amman. Through living labs and participatory activities, it will actively involve citizens, families, schools, public administrations and local producers in the design of sustainable solutions.
The project will carry out different activities focused on the sustainable transformation of school food systems; the reduction of food waste; the promotion of local and seasonal supply chains; the development of digital and educational tools based on artificial intelligence; the creation of gamified applications for students; the improvement of food literacy; and the co-creation of public policies together with municipalities and local stakeholders.
SHADES is expected to contribute to improving dietary habits and adherence to the Mediterranean diet, raising food awareness among children and families, reducing food waste and strengthening more resilient, sustainable and inclusive local food systems.
Eurecat participates in the project through its Nutrition and Health unit, which acts as scientific coordinator. The consortium, coordinated by ENCO srl (Italy), brings together 14 partners from different countries in Europe and the MENA region, including technology centres, universities, municipalities, companies and organisations specialising in nutrition, sustainability, innovation and food governance. Participating countries include Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Morocco and Jordan.
This European project, funded by the PRIMA programme, has a duration of 36 months.
