PHASAL EURECAT

Development of new biodegradable plastic formulations for the biomedical sector.

The PHASAL project develops different bioplastic formulations that introduce PHB-HV with different loads of hydroxyvalerate (-HV) from the revaluation of organic waste.

The objective is that these formulations, applicable to the health field, present advanced biodegradability and biocompatibility properties to minimize the environmental impact they present due to their poor recyclability.

In this sense, PHASAL develops a complex rigid packaging system, such as a suture kit, and a direct medical application with controlled drug release, such as a transdermal patch.

The new advanced formulations developed during the PHASAL project are aimed at improving mechanical properties, making polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) a material with good impact properties, extending useful life and controlling fluidity to facilitate its processability. The results obtained will allow extrapolation to other applications in different sectors in the future.

The processes for obtaining the demonstrators allow us to validate that the material is suitable for use in transformation processes as diverse as electrospinning, compounding or injection molding.

Likewise, these demonstrators will undergo accelerated aerobic biodegradability testing under controlled composting conditions, to validate product cycle closure and an environmentally responsible end-of-life.

The PHASAL consortium is formed by VEnvirotech Biotechnology, INTEPLAST, Eurecat and the PSEP Research Group of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).

Eurecat participates through its Polymeric & composite processes unit, responsible for the characterization of materials, processability tests and formulation support; as well as the Waste, Energy and Environmental Impact (WEEI) unit, which develops a methodology that allows the biodegradation of new materials to be determined in an accelerated manner.
