SWIFT EURECAT

Resilient, autonomous, and intelligent water management solution for military units operating in diverse and challenging environments.

SWIFT transforms water management in military field operations through disruptive technological innovations tailored to modular, mobile camps.

The project replaces traditional, centralised, and energy-intensive methods—such as bottled water supply and reverse osmosis—with a circular, integrated system for water reuse and recycling.

Focusing on advanced technologies like graphene-based filtration and photocatalytic processes, SWIFT ensures safe and clean water while reducing energy demands. It also emphasises the coupling of water and energy systems for improved efficiency and resilience, including demand-side energy management.

To support operational safety, the project develops health risk monitoring tools and contamination detection systems, and enhances planning and control through AI-based planning agents and Digital Twin technologies.

With a budget of nearly €4 million and a 42-month duration, the SWIFT project unites a diverse and balanced consortium of civilian and military partners from six EU countries (Greece, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany). It combines the strengths of six leading research institutions and five industry leaders active in both civilian and defence sectors.

Eurecat participates in the SWIFT project through two technological Units:

  • The Water, Air and Soil (WAS) Unit develops decentralised water systems and treatment technologies in a military context, bringing state-of-the-art knowledge on distributed water systems and innovative water and wastewater treatment. Moreover, the Unit is in charge of the health risk assessment, offering strong expertise in health risk assessment and management, particularly concerning waterborne risks.
  • The Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) Unit contributes with leading-edge innovation in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Smart Water Camps. The Unit offers strong expertise in Digital Twins and AI/ML Monitoring and Control by developing a monitoring tool library to be integrated in the Digital Twin.
