WATER-MINING EURECAT

Large-scale demonstration of water-smart and efficient management systems to promote a circular economy and society.

The WATER-MINING project aims to aims to be an example for social embedding of innovative solutions in a wide spectrum of technology applications. WATER-MINING provides examples for real-world implementation of the Water Framework Directive to help the transition to Circular Economy, incorporating EU Green Deal packages.

The demonstrations will integrate innovative technologies developed by partners and from previously funded EU projects. These novel technologies will be demonstrated in different pilots realised in Spain, Cyprus, Portugal, Italy and The Netherlands to reclaim nutrients, minerals, energy and water from industrial and urban wastewaters and seawater.

On the other hand, the value-added end products (water, platform chemicals, energy, nutrients and minerals) are expected to provide regional resource supplies to fuel economic developments.

The Water, Air and Soil (WAS) Unit of Eurecat participates in the project leading the work package related to the treatment of urban water, developing more sustainable biological processes and cooperating in the recovery of solvents from industrial wastewater. The project also counts with the participation of the Waste, Energy and Environmental Impact (WEEI) Unit, which is in charge to analyse the sustainability of the new proposed solutions by developing a system of indicators and the Smart Management Systems Unit, which participates in the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques, promoting strategies that help to reduce energy consumption.

The WATER-MINING project, led by the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) is formed by 38 public and private partners and four linked third parties in 12 countries.
