Improve sustainability and agricultural decision-making in Africa through artificial intelligence.
The BRIDGE-AI project aims to improve agricultural decision-making and digital training in African rural areas through the integration of solutions based on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). Through the combined use of satellite data, field sensors, AI models and intuitive mobile interfaces, the project offers tools adapted to the local needs of Kenya, Tunisia and Nigeria. This combination facilitates more efficient, sustainable and accessible agriculture.
BRIDGE-AI’s research focuses on addressing challenges such as water scarcity, soil degradation and the impacts of climate change, while promoting social inclusion and strengthening the role of women in the agricultural and technological sector. Through “Living Labs”, the project is committed to the co-design of solutions with local communities. This helps to integrate social, economic and cultural factors and boost the development of digital skills to ensure their adoption and long-term impact.
To validate this proposal, BRIDGE-AI is developed through several case studies focused on the cultivation of mushrooms, corn, pastures and pomegranates, in different African pilot regions. These tests allow to demonstrate the effectiveness of the solutions in real contexts and facilitate that they can be replicated in other territories.
BRIDGE-AI is a project coordinated by Eurecat through its Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit, leading the development of the system and digital tools. Within this framework, Eurecat will develop a GenAI orchestrator, as well as tools to monitor primary production and a RAG system based on linked data, which will allow to generate personalized recommendations for African farmers.
European and African entities from five countries – Spain, Kenya, Tunisia, Nigeria and Austria – are part of the consortium, including Eurecat, the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Seamless Middleware Technologies, Jomo Kenyatta University, University of Sousse, MOOME, Agroinfotech Labs Limited and Austria Card, which work together to promote the transfer of knowledge and the continuity of results.
