Repsol’s Industrial Complex in Tarragona and the Eurecat technology centre have stepped up their partnership to kick-start joint projects designed to fast-track industrial innovation, development and scaling of high-value tech solutions. The alliance is all about bringing together unique advanced tech capabilities to revamp industrial models towards the circular economy, decarbonisation, tech self-sufficiency, sustainability and operational resilience.

This strategic cooperation, which has been set up under a strategic agreement, looks to build advanced industrial solutions blending specific knowledge in artificial intelligence, autonomous robotics and smart automation technologies to transform key processes in the petrochemical industry.

The goal is to address structural challenges in the industrial sector such as CO2 recovery, energy efficiency in complex operations, cutting emissions from energy-intensive industries and gradually replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources. The alliance opens up new opportunities to turn the current technological transformation into a tangible competitive advantage aligned with climate neutrality and industrial leadership goals.

“The alliance with Eurecat ramps up our commitment to practical innovation for addressing the real challenges facing the industry,” says Javier Sancho, director of Repsol’s Industrial Complex in Tarragona. “It enables us to make progress on technological solutions which we can apply directly to our processes, thereby enhancing our efficiency, sustainability and competitiveness.”

At Repsol’s Industrial Complex in Tarragona, “we firmly believe in the value of collaboration. Initiatives like this help us fast-track decarbonisation, unlock the circular economy and make Tarragona a leader in the energy transition. Together, we are building the industry of the future.”

This agreement “brings together the joint capabilities of Eurecat and Repsol’s Industrial Complex in Tarragona to promote strategic projects combining high-impact technological innovation with industrial vision,” notes Xavier López, Eurecat’s Chief Operating and Corporate Officer. This partnership “will enable us to scale up solutions which expedite decarbonisation of the chemical industry while also generating new drivers of competitiveness, sustainability and international positioning for the country’s industry.”

“This agreement means we can beef up our innovation model by developing and testing tech that we can use straight away in our production processes,” adds Román Juncosa, Senior Engineering Manager at Repsol’s Industrial Complex in Tarragona. “This leads to real improvements in energy efficiency, circularity and digital integration which are big deals in our shift towards a more advanced and competitive industry.”

Likewise, this joint development “channels innovation towards solving real industrial challenges with a systemic and scalable vision,” points out Gabriel Anzaldi, Eurecat’s Director of Scientific and Technological Development. “Eurecat brings advanced scientific and technological capabilities, agility in integrating disruptive technologies and a close connection with the ecosystem to maximise the economic, environmental and industrial impact in the region.”

Both organisations agree that this partnership will be pivotal in accelerating the innovation cycle, driving new shared capabilities and cementing Tarragona’s position as a state-of-the-art industrial hub ready to lead the way in tackling the major challenges of the technological transition.
