Míriam Carolina Pérez Cova, researcher from ACCIONA, participated in the XXXVII Congress of the Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation (AEAS), which took place between June 5th-7th, 2024, in Castellón (Spain).
On June 6th, she delivered a presentation about LIFE PRISTINE, giving a global overview of the project. The talk was entitled “LIFE PRISTINE: Eliminating emerging contaminants from water treatment systems”.
In particular, she raised the issue of the presence of contaminants of emerging concern in different water streams and introduced the PRISTINE Integrated solution.
Concretely, she presented the results obtained in the analytical campaign performed during one year in a drinking water scenario. Pharmaceuticals were the contaminants predominantly detected, but other compounds of interest as perfluorobutanesulfonic acid, bisphenol A, nonylphenol and glyphosate were detected too. In addition, regarding microplastics, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate were detected (particles below 50 µm). The campaign allows to detect all the antibiotic resistance genes measured.
The PRISTINE Integrated Solution will tackle the elimination of these compounds to achieve concentrations below the ones established in the UE Directive (2022/679) and in the Spanish legislation (RD 3/2023), as well anticipate the compliance of future legislations.
The AEAS Congress constitutes the main meeting forum, at the national level, of professionals, companies and institutions to debate and transfer knowledge on the aspects of greatest interest related to the integral cycle of urban water.
