GREENHOOD EURECAT

Nutrient management strategies for regional ecosystems across Europe.

GREENHOOD pioneers a comprehensive approach to address the global challenge of unbalanced nutrient flows in regional ecosystems, tackling climate change and biodiversity loss.

Specifically, GREENHOOD reduces nutrient losses in soil, air and water; develops scalable solutions for nutrient management, and enables cross-sector collaboration across all stakeholders.

The rebalancing actions are being tested in four different demonstrators, representing different cases of unbalanced regions and focusing on diverse emitting hotspots, including diffuse and point-based emitting sectors.

As outcomes of the project, GREENHOOD will implement nutrient flow mapping by analysing and optimising regional nutrient budgets; will boost balancing techniques to mitigate nutrient losses, and will develop policies and strategies to support adoption.

Today, imbalanced nutrient flows are causing major impacts on human and environmental health, creating environmental and economic challenges for agriculture, forestry, and water management. In this sense, GREENHOOD paves the way for societies to operate within safe ecological boundaries while meeting socioeconomic needs.

Eurecat takes part in GREENHOOD through its Units of Water, Air and Soil (WAS), in charge of the coordination and quantification of the nutrient balance, the enhancement of organic waste treatment processes and the mitigation of nutrient losses in nitrate-contaminated groundwater; and its Waste, Water and Environmental Impact (WEEI) Unit, responsible for the sustainability assessment.

The project is coordinated by Fundació Universitària Balmes and the consortium is made up by 32 entities from nine European countries.
