SUB-FO EURECAT

Development of an innovative membrane technology and reactor process with high quality of water recycling.

The Sub-FO (submerged forward osmosis) project presents a specific configuration which combines the benefits of forward osmosis (FO), such as the high separation performances and low energy requirements, with submerged membrane processes, as the treatment of highly polluted and concentrated streams.

The project is of key interest in the context of water in the circular economy by assuring reuse of water of the highest quality and nutrients concentration for facilitated downstream process. On the other hand, reuse and upgrading of existing installation and end-of life materials will be investigated during the project.

Sub-FO project aims to achieve a large scale demonstration of the technology developed; to develop novel membranes (hollow fibre modules, new generation of flat sheet membranes, recycled modules) for broader configurations and to validate the prototypes in innovative water reuse applications, treatment of high salinity effluents and volume reduction towards zero liquid discharge (ZLD)

The Unit of Water, Air and Soil (WAS) of Eurecat participates in the project working in tasks dedicated to advanced membrane module manufacturing and validation for the treatment of high salinity effluents and zero liquid discharge.

The project also counts with the participation of a consortium formed by the Institut Européen des Membranes (France) and collaboration with Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (LEQUIA), and the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA).
