TIC I TURISME EURECAT

Innovative, sustainable, and smart solutions to improve tourism management in Barcelona.

The TIC I TURISME project promotes the use of technology, data, and innovation to optimize tourism management in Barcelona, fostering a more sustainable, intelligent, and responsible model

The project includes several complementary actions aimed at generating knowledge, improving existing digital tools, and promoting technology transfer to the sector. Among them, the statistical operation for measuring the occupancy of tourist accommodations through the Tourism Data System (TDS) stands out, providing reliable and up-to-date indicators to support decision-making. Additionally, a study based on mobile phone data has been developed to analyze visitor flows, characterize profiles, and understand urban-scale tourist mobility.

In addition, the project also promotes the Forum TurisTIC, a reference space organized by Eurecat that connects companies, public administrations, and experts to share trends and foster innovation in tourism, and maintains the Check Barcelona platform, a digital tool that provides useful information to visitors and helps ensure a safer and more orderly experience in the city. These initiatives combine technology and data to support more efficient, sustainable tourism that prioritizes the quality of the visitor experience.

TIC I TURISME is a project driven through an agreement with the Barcelona City Council and includes the participation of Eurecat through its Consulting department and the Big Data & Data Science unit.

The agreement includes dissemination and training actions (especially through the TurisTIC Forum) that contribute to continuous training within the sector, the dissemination of knowledge, and the improvement of skills in ICT and tourism management.

The project’s actions contribute to the development of a more competitive, efficient tourism sector that is better prepared to face future challenges. The knowledge generated improves economic decision-making, promotes responsible growth, and boosts activity linked to innovation and digitalisation.

The project promotes the digitalisation of the tourism sector, the development and use of advanced technological tools, and the transfer of knowledge in innovation. This modernises tourism management infrastructure and enables data-driven processes.

The project provides key information to responsibly manage tourist flows, reduce pressure on sensitive areas, and foster coexistence between visitors and residents. The tools and studies developed support the planning of data-driven urban policies aimed at sustainable and orderly tourism.

The use of data and digital tools helps promote more sustainable tourism practices, reduce crowding, improve resource-use efficiency, and inform visitors and businesses about responsible behaviours.

Indirectly, the project helps reduce the environmental impact of tourism through smart mobility management, reduced congestion, and the optimisation of infrastructure, thereby lowering energy consumption and associated emissions.

The project strengthens close collaboration between public administration and the technology centre, and fosters relations with the business sector, associations, and other tourism and ICT stakeholders. This partnership is essential for generating joint strategies and promoting a sustainable and innovative tourism model.
