The first session of the tourism workshop ‘How to undertake visitor flow management initiatives to enhance the tourist experience’ unpacked the guidelines for sustainable tourism flow management and leisure-related mobility systems at tourist destinations for the Costa Daurada’s tourism practitioners, managers and businesses.

The issues discussed in the session led by Xavier Cazorla, an environmentalist and consultant in ecotourism and sustainable tourism, included committing to local experiential leisure, smart and responsible management of natural areas, transport options which cut carbon footprints and accessible ecotourism. As Cazorla points out, “mobility is a key concern in aspects such as the climate emergency, more sustainable visitor access to nearby or more distant leisure venues, and also the accessibility we need to deliver as a social good for everyone.”

The workshop was opened by Camí Mendoza, first deputy chair of Tarragona Provincial Council’s Tourist Board. It heard about the visitor flow management put in place to regulate admission to Trabucador beach this summer in Terres de l’Ebre from Jordi López, coordinator of the Sant Carles de la Ràpita-Delta de l’Ebre Tourist Board and Water Sports Centre.

Finally, tourism destinations were described based on visitor flows and strategies for evaluating the capacity of a tourist site or resource.

The Costa Daurada session was held this Wednesday at Rovira i Virgili University’s Faculty of Geography in Vila-seca. Meanwhile the Terres de l’Ebre session will be run on 29 November at the URV’s Terres de l’Ebre Campus in Tortosa, where the case study of the booking system used to enter the ‘Cova del Llop Marí’ during the high season in l’Hospitalet de l’Infant will be presented by Sílvia Carrillo, l’Hospitalet de l’Infant i la Vall de Llors Tourism Officer.

This practical workshop, hosted by the Tourism Innovation and Intelligence Laboratory in the Tourism Innovation Department at the Eurecat technology centre and Tarragona Provincial Council’s Tourist Board in Costa Daurada and Terres de l’Ebre, further explored the topic kicked off last October at the ‘Optimal visitor management’ conference.
