The Eurecat technology centre is backing food innovation and design by taking part in World Food Design Day 2021, a 20-hour international online marathon run by the FORK organisation this Saturday, 16 October, to tie in with World Food Day.

Design and creative solutions will take centre stage at this event which will share best practices, actions and ideas from around the world that are helping to change consumer habits and agri-food production and marketing systems. The organisers are looking to acknowledge the value of design in rethinking and redesigning the current food industry system towards sustainability.

Designers, students, producers, chefs, innovators, creatives and technology and food practitioners will showcase their projects to craft more sustainable experiences, showing how creativity, innovation and design can bring about change and deliver solutions to shift towards a more sustainable food system.

The Eurecat technology centre campaigns to drive sustainability and innovation in the nutrition, food and health industries. Its Biotechnology Division is a leader in personalised nutrition, a growing trend on the cutting edge of the food industry and which in the coming years will make it possible to devise healthy functional foods and beverages specifically for groups of consumers based on genetic and metabolic characteristics, lifestyle and other factors.

It also conducts major research into protein sources at a time when it is estimated that 60 million tons of protein will be required to meet population demand by 2030, a timeframe in which the need for food is also expected to grow by 50 percent.

The driving force behind the event is the international FORK Food Design for Opportunities, Research and Knowledge think tank, a non-profit organisation made up of experts and practitioners in food and design committed to the sustainability of the planet, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which seeks to rethink and reframe current food systems and human diet. Its purpose is to foster a creative environment where all stakeholders in the value chain can find their space and become agents of change, #foodchangers, and thus support the development of a healthier and more ethical, equal and sustainable world.
