The Centre for Omic Sciences (COS), a joint Eurecat technology centre and Rovira i Virgili University unit, has stressed at the COS 2024 Annual Symposium held in Reus the role of microbiota in innovation projects and studies conducted to understand and improve human health, nutrition and the environment.

“It has been shown that balanced gut microbiota can help prevent metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes while they are also correlated with autoimmune disorders and mental illnesses,” said COS technical director Núria Canela. Furthermore, in the environmental context the microbiota of ecosystems such as soil and water “are essential in biogeochemical cycles, pollutant degradation and fostering plant and animal health.”

The symposium has furnished a comprehensive overview of the role of microbiota in numerous contexts while also showcasing innovative technologies and techniques related to omics technologies in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics in biotech, biomedical and environmental research.

The second annual symposium of the URV and Eurecat COS, a node in the OmicsTech Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure, has addressed various perspectives on the study of microbiota in nutritional, clinical and environmental fields with experts from academia and industry.
