At ISE 2024, the leading international trade fair for the audiovisual and integrated systems industry, the Eurecat technology centre is presenting a new 3D sound system for audio books which delivers an immersive digital reading experience through narratives enhanced with 3D special effects and music creations.

These new media technologies are applied in an innovative multimedia audio book format as part of the European Möbius project. They make it possible to craft content and experiences with 3D sound and binaural playback which authors can link to e-books to achieve immersive audio books and narratives enhanced with 3D special effects and music creations.

“Möbius puts forward new business models to enable the publishing industry to accommodate new market trends and needs and add value in the publishing process with cutting-edge tools such as a cross-media web application which turns stories into immersive and interactive experiences,” says Adan Garriga, director of the Multimedia Technologies Unit at the Eurecat technology centre.

An application has also been developed which allows the reader to “combine text, 3D audio and audiovisual displays based on the book’s artistic components,” he adds.

Eurecat and Mobile World Capital Barcelona are two of the eleven European partners from Spain, Italy (DEN Institute, Bookabook), Germany (KKW, MVB, IN2) and Belgium (IMEC, KU Leuven, Federation of European Publishers) making up the consortium for the Möbius project which is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme.

Technologies for innovating in cultural and creative industries

In the Catalonia Pavilion at the ISE 2024 fair, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary, Eurecat is showcasing various solutions for 3D image and audio processing, gesture and emotion recognition tapping artificial intelligence, immersive enhancement in virtual reality environments, quality optimisation in hearing aids and the creation of virtual tours for innovation in the cultural and creative industries.

The Eurecat technology centre “has infrastructures in place to transfer these technologies to industry to enable it to apply innovations in managing heritage and cultural, leisure and tourism projects anchored in culture, regional development and the creative economy,” points out Mònica Andreu, Eurecat’s Cultural and Creative Industries Market Business Developer.

In audiovisual technologies, it combines 3D sound and binaural audio with production and post-production of music, content and immersive systems.
