The eBook “The Tourism Industry Facing the Challenge of AI” brought out by the Tourism Technology Centres group, of which Eurecat is a member, in conjunction with Thinktur unpacks trends in the use and application of artificial intelligence and explores this technology’s impact on tourism.
In the eBook, the Eurecat technology centre presents the features of the Smart Tourism Data System (Smart TDS) platform for data management and analytics in the tourism industry, a modular system designed to be integrated into a data space.
“The Smart TDS is a strategic partner for the tourism industry as it includes a forecasting module tapping advanced machine learning techniques to enable destinations to anticipate trends plus another social media module which rolls out text analytics to scrutinise tourists’ feedback and thus grasp the collective perception of destinations and understand tourism dynamics,” says Eurecat technology consultant Jordi Carbonell.
“The platform will be fed by data from the Tourism Data Spaces project, a data space developed by the technology centre as an integrating node for various data sources which will be interconnected with a European Data Space,” he adds.
The eBook has been unveiled by Álvaro Carrillo de Albornoz, Director General of the Tourism Technology Platform – Thinktur, at FITURTECHY24. He set out its in-depth look at AI’s impact on tourism including experience personalisation, better data use, designing more successful digital marketing campaigns and implementing specific AI-powered tools such as chatbots.
The publication contextualises and showcases the applicability and potential that the use of AI by tourism destinations and businesses may have in the future. It thus shares the technology centres’ initiatives and projects in this field together with their vision and various success stories such as Gaia-X. Plus the technology centres have also identified potential risks which make it essential to consider aspects including specific legislation, mechanisms addressing ethical and bias issues, tools ensuring the accuracy of results and the privacy and security of personal information.
The eBook has been put together by the industry’s foremost tourism technology centres including Andalucía Lab, Eurecat, ITREM – Murcia Region Tourism Institute, Invat-tur, ITH, SEGITTUR, Tecnalia, Turistec and Vicomtech with the support of experts from digital technology organisations and businesses partnering these centres.
