Decarbonisation strategies for the Ebro Delta through more sustainable rice cultivation and natural carbon capture.

FixantCarboni drives decarbonisation strategies tailored to the environmental, productive and socioeconomic characteristics of the Ebro Delta. The project addresses the challenge of climate change mitigation from a territorial perspective, combining the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions with the enhancement of natural carbon capture and storage.

The project is built around two complementary lines of work. The first promotes the transition towards a more sustainable, regenerative rice cultivation model aimed at reducing methane emissions, improving the environmental functions of rice fields and creating new value opportunities for the sector. Within this context, it also explores business models and carbon credit mechanisms that can help provide economic recognition for the environmental benefits generated by the new farming practices.

The second studies the capacity of coastal ecosystems to capture and store carbon, in order to identify the habitats and areas with the greatest potential as natural sinks and to guide future conservation and restoration efforts.

Integrating both lines makes it possible to move towards a comprehensive vision of decarbonisation in the Ebro Delta, connecting productive activity, nature conservation and the generation of environmental value. FixantCarboni thus generates knowledge and tools to support future climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and to strengthen the positioning of southern Catalonia as a demonstrator territory for innovative climate resilience solutions.

FixantCarboni is coordinated by Eurecat, which takes part through its Climate Sustainability and Environmental Systems unit (CLIMSES), responsible for coordinating and delivering the project.
