Use of technological and digital tools to study and manage tourism in the city of Barcelona in a sustainable and responsible manner
The TIC Turisme 2026 project examines tourism in Barcelona from various angles (visitor types and origins, mobility flows, length of stay, etc.) with the aim of improving management and relieving congestion in the city’s most strained areas. To achieve this, the project carries out three main activities: the statistical measurement of accommodation occupancy in the city, studies on visitor flow management in Barcelona, and the TurisTIC Forum project.
Together, this combination of activities provides valuable information regarding Barcelona’s visitors and their behaviour. This data is cross-referenced with the behaviour of residents and repeat visitors to estimate the potential impact of these groups coexisting in the same space. The information is accessible via a unified technological infrastructure.
These tourism studies focus on High-Footfall Areas (EGAs), aligning with the City Council’s efforts to manage these spaces, which face significant strain due to the disproportionate number of visitors they receive —both in absolute terms and in terms of density.
The project complements its tourism-study work with a forum for debate through the TurisTIC Forum, an annual gathering that brings together the ICT and tourism sectors to showcase the technological roadmap and emerging trends within this rapidly changing landscape.
Through its Big Data & Data Science unit, Consulting Department, and Events and Engagement Unit, Eurecat provides a multidisciplinary team with extensive experience in the fields of urban science and mobility, applied to the management of more sustainable tourism.
TIC Turisme is a project driven through an agreement with the Ajuntament de Barcelona.
