IRAIN EURECAT

Artificial intelligence to reuse wastewater and nutrients in the agricultural sector.

The iRAIN project investigates an innovative advanced water resource management system to optimize water resources applied in precision agriculture.

iRAIN’s system combines new treatments for water regeneration and nutrient recovery from urban wastewater with hybrid technologies based on monitoring, artificial intelligence and spectroscopy by fusing data from satellites, drones , agricultural robots, sensor networks and smart multispectral cameras.

The initiative’s work plan is divided into four activities: research into water regeneration techniques and nutrient recovery for agricultural use; research into advanced techniques for monitoring water quality and crop condition; study and design of digital solutions for the management of the activity of waste treatment plants; and finally validation in real environments.

Eurecat participates in the iRAIN project through different technological units:

  • The Water, Air and Soil (WAS) Unit researches new technologies for water regeneration and nutrient recovery from urban waste water.
  • The Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) Unit designs hybrid models based on artificial intelligence for the study of effluent quality and evolution of the vegetative cycle of the use case.
  • The Robotics and Automation Unit develops algorithms for managing fleets of autonomous robots for the capture of crop data in situ.

The project consortium, led by FACSA, is made up of eight companies and two technology centers.
