LIVLAB-IN EURECAT

Insecticulture and circular economy.

LIVLAB-IN transforms agriculture and agroindustry through insecticulture and the principles of the circular economy.

This project uses insect production as a solution for the valorisation of by-products, waste and plant residues, contributing to a more sustainable and profitable model in several links of the food chain, from the first transformation to the waste generated in food stores.

Through this methodology, LIVLAB-IN proposes solutions to optimise the use of resources (breeding substrate, space, energy and water), to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to take advantage of waste nutrients efficiently, helping to convert waste into high-value products for animal feed, biofertiliser production and generation of biomaterials.

The disruptive approach of the project creates a positive impact on the environment and society by promoting practices that favour sustainability and foster new economic opportunities for primary and agro-industrial producers.

LIVLAB-IN proposes a new model for the application of effective circular economy schemes in the biovalorisation of food by-products, providing concrete solutions to improve the competitiveness and resilience of the agri-food sector through a better use of its own by-products/waste.

Eurecat participates in the LIVLAB-IN project through the Technological Units of Nutrition and Health and of Waste, Energy and Environmental Impact (WEEI), responsible for the coordination of the project, the characterisation of the by-products, the study of their use in insect farming, the characterisation of the resulting products and the environmental impact of the project processes.
