In 2010, the project “Creation of a European Project Management Office at BIGITAL” was successfully launched under the INNO EUROPE programme in response to the need to create a solid structure in order to increase the quantity and quality of proposals, encourage participation, and increase the return on public funds obtained for research activities financed by the European Union (EU). Now, a Seventh EU Framework Programme (7FP) is under way for the activity and progression of ongoing projects, while the requirements of the European Project Management Office (EPMO) in terms of resources and knowledge is also increasing. The [+PM@BDIGITAL] project meets these growing requirements.
In 2011, the strategy the Barcelona Digital was working towards to reach the 7FP objectives – better evaluation, greater return, better leadership, more participating Spanish companies, and excellence in project implementation – was based on two fundamental pillars:
- To provide support for R&D+i teams and the development of business to present more and better proposals, and to help incorporate more companies into the consortium.
- To reinforce the structure and increase the EPMO’s experience in project management, gain expert knowledge of the 7FP, and to improve processing tools.
In order to continue its endeavour to gain maturity, the EPMO at Barcelona Digital needs to become more professionalized and consolidated. This is why it needs a well defined and established theoretical conceptual foundation with professionals specialized in project management and in the field of the Seventh Framework Programme. In order to optimize its work and increase its capacity to take advantage of all the opportunities offered by the 7FP, the EPMO requires more human resources, training, and tools for project management.
