Inclusive and justice-oriented strategies for climate risk management and community resilience.
The JUSTSAFE project develops and implements justice-oriented strategies for climate risk management to protect vulnerable and marginalized groups who are disproportionately affected by climate change. By providing local and regional authorities with tools, data, and participatory methods, the project helps design inclusive climate adaptation plans that strengthen community resilience to extreme weather events and environmental hazards.
To ensure that climate resilience policies are socially inclusive and equitable, JUSTSAFE promotes co-creation and participatory governance. The initiative brings together research institutions, local governments and civil society to design adaptation measures that reflect the needs of vulnerable populations.
These collaborative processes are complemented by social and technical tools, including vulnerability models, human behaviour analysis, and digital decision-support systems. Together, they strengthen institutional capacity and align with the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
These solutions will be tested across ten sites in Greece, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Slovakia, Romania, and Latvia to create a scalable model for just climate resilience.
The JUSTSAFE consortium involves 25 partners from 12 countries and is coordinated by the Municipality of Egaleo (Greece). Eurecat participates in the project through its Big Data and Data Science unit, leading the development of technological solutions, digital twins to model how climate hazards specifically impact vulnerable neighborhoods, and citizen science and the Climate Solutions & Ecosystem Services unit, which provides expertise in climate solutions and leads the design and implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), including urban greening activities within the Amposta demonstration site.
